Thornton Community Centre and Sports Hall

Thornton Community centre was built in 1973 and is the hub of village life with many groups using the facilities and holding events there.

The main hall is ideal for all manner of events from private parties to concerts and is home to the Markfield and Thornton theatre group; the stage making it an ideal venue for local amateur dramatic productions. It is ideal for wedding receptions, with stunning views across the National Forest and Thornton reservoir.

There is plenty of space throughout the two halls for craft fairs, art exhibitions plus much more.

Outside the hall there is a large grassed area leading to the children’s playground and the footpath to the reservoir.

In May 2017 a new kitchen was fitted to the hall; new flooring in the meeting room, other  improvements include book and jigsaw puzzle swap facilities.

The Trustees of the centre are committed to keeping the hall in the best possible state of repair, and are constantly striving to update, the now, 50 year old facilities.  Projects being discussed are the refurbishment of the toilets, repairs to the roof, extending the car park and creating a decking area off the hall patio doors. To assist with these much needed projects we are looking for financial aid in the form of grants and donations.

There is a large car park available at the centre.

Next to the main hall there is a self contained Sports hall with its own kitchen and toilets.

Early in 2017 the trustees purchased sports equipment and in June 2017 started up an informal sports club.  There are three table tennis tables and equipment plus a badminton court and equipment available.  New players are always welcome.   See more info or contact Paul Muller  – thorntonmondaysports@gmail.com.

Many groups use the hall on a regular basis – see the table below.  (Awaiting post Covid update).

The hall is available for hire at all other times at very reasonable rates (and discounted rates for residents) see table below.

Pre Covid a range of different events were held regularly at the centre, including the very popular quiz nights, concerts, craft fairs and of course the annual pantomime and plays. As we gradually return to ‘normal’ after the Covid rules relax the Committee are already looking towards future fundraising events.

If you have an idea for a village event please let us know, we would be glad to discuss it with you.
