St Peter’s church, Thornton – Heritage Weekend

This weekend, 12th and 13th September,  is St Peter’s Heritage weekend, with the theme  Thornton Reservoir’s birds as well as the history of the village and church.

 

Do hope you will be able to come along.  The event is free.

Saturday :10am – 5pm,  Sunday: 1-5pm

Listen to talks by Andy Smith about reservoir birdlife on Saturday 12th August at 10.30am and 2pm; 

Discover more about the birds that frequent our reservoir;

Visit our ‘Historic Thornton’ exhibition with fascinating insights into the history of our village;

Read about ‘Tales of village life’ from past decades;

Explore our lovely Grade 1 historical church for yourselves and discover its wealth of history;

Join  informal talks about local history on Sunday afternoon from 2pm.

 

Refreshments available.  Homemade chocolate brownies,  Old Fashioned sweet stall including homemade fudge.

Souvenirs, and Alexia’s beautiful cards.

Invited to a weekend country estate by Lady Angkatell, Poirot arrives to find a grim real-life scene by the pool: a dying doctor, John Christow, lying next to a pool of blood with his distraught wife standing over him holding a gun.

What initially looks like an open-and-shut domestic crime turns into a complex web of romantic entanglements, jealousy, and hidden motives among the weekend guests.

Heritage Weekend – We Want Your Stories! ðŸŒ¿

As in previous years we are taking part in National Heritage week and are putting together a special Heritage Weekend event at St. Peter’s Church, on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th September 2026 to celebrate Thornton and our beautiful Grade 1 listed Church.

The event will include information on the history and birdlife of Thornton and will be suitable for all ages. 

We would love local people, past and present residents, families and friends of Thornton to come forward and share their memories, stories and photographs of our wonderful village.

Maybe you remember the old shops, schools, businesses, village events, local characters, traditions or special moments from years gone by?

Every memory, whether big or small, helps to bring Thornton’s history to life and preserve it for future generations.

Heritage Open Days & The National Churches Trust ‘Ride & Stride’

Welcome to England’s largest festival of history and culture!

Every September thousands of volunteers across England organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.

Also every September the National Churches Trust organises ‘Ride and Stride’ for churches – sponsored cycle rides and walks that raise money for the restoration and maintenance of our historic churches and chapels.

Limited street parking. Access from Church Lane by the Corner shop, or take a stroll along the path at Thornton reservoir and walk up to the church from the reservoir.

St Peter’s Church, Thornton

Very largely Early English in character; the nave and the two aisles dating from the beginning of the 14th century or slightly earlier.

St Peter’s church is Grade I listed.

The west tower and spire and the nave clerestory are Perpendicular, added in the 15th century, and the chancel was rebuilt in 1864. The north arcade of the nave has massive octagonal pillars, while that on the south side has quatrefoil pillars. The north aisle has a rare window of ‘ox eye’ design, a cusped spherical triangle. The nave has a full set of Tudor benches, dating from the 1560s their bench ends having carved linenfold panelling.
