Celebration Of Angels

This year we are celebrating angels at St Peter’s church, Thornton during the weekend of 13th and 14th of December.

You are invited to help us in this venture by creating your version of celebrating angels in whatever medium you choose.  It could be decorating a Christmas Tree with angels, paper chains of angels, mobile of angels, knitted angels – anything that is angelic.

Prizes will be awarded to the best in three different categories as judged by the people visiting the celebration during the weekend.

Prizes will be given out after the Carol Service which will take place at 6pm on Sunday, 14th December.

If you are interested in creating and exhibiting your own display please let us know by contacting  Sue on suembakewell@gmail.com or 01530 231625.

Thornton Community Centre – thank you.

The trustees would like to say a big thank you to Wj.uk, a leading road line marking company based in Milton Keynes, for their community spirit in renewing the very worn white and yellow lines in the Centre car park at no cost.

They have also created a second parking bay for the less able, and two yellow ‘boxes’ to allow better access for pedestrians heading to the play areas and reservoir, and for machinery to access to the field behind the centre.

The work was organised by Mai Vasudevan and carried out by Joe Stubbs and his team on Thursday, whilst the centre was closed for half term. A difficult task in the torrential rain.

Thank you it looks so much better and another improvement completed off a very long ‘to do’ list.

McSmith Events – Comedy Night

A new events company based in Thornton, McSmith Events, hosted their first event at Thornton Community Centre on Saturday 11th October.

Together with Comedy Hotspot they brought the first of what is hoped to be many Comedy nights to Thornton.

It was a hoot, three excellent comedians and a very funny host entertained us over a two and a half hour period, with the occasional short break to replenish our drinks from the bar set up in the meeting room and kitchen.

Don’t miss the next one on Friday 20th February 2026 – tickets available soon.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable evening and something very different for Thornton.

In keeping with their ethos, McSmith Events ran a raffle with some excellent prizes, to raise money for the Community Centre (a charitable organisation that relies on donations, grants and bookings). Plus promised a £1 from every ticket sold to be donated to the centre.

The Trustees sincerely thank McSmith Events for their donation of £204 towards the running costs of the Centre.

The Beacon Players – Woodhouse Eaves

Present a comedy thriller – ‘A Tomb with a View’.

“A Tomb with a View” is a comedic thriller by Norman Robbins, set in a sinister library where a lawyer reads a will to a bizarre family, leading to a series of unexpected twists and turns.

Plot Summary

The play unfolds in the eerie library of the Tomb Mansion, where the family gathers for the reading of the will of the recently deceased patriarch, Septimus Tomb. The characters  include a variety of eccentric family members, such as a werewolf-obsessed brother, a toga wearing relative who believes he is Julius Caesar, and a gentle old lady with a penchant for  gardening. As the will is read, tensions rise, and soon, bodies start piling up, leading to a  chaotic and humorous investigation into the family’s dark secrets.

Themes and Style

“A Tomb with a View” is characterized by its blend of comedy and thriller elements, often described as a spoof thriller. The play features numerous plot twists, red herrings, and a  cast of characters that are both humorous and sinister. The setting in a gloomy mansion  adds to the atmosphere, creating a backdrop for the unfolding drama and comedy.
