Last weekend quad bikers smashed down the fencing and gate to gain entry to Bagworth Heath and ‘visited’ again during the week. They have damaged acres of grassland throughout the heath.
Things are different this year and sadly it doesn’t look as though the local churches will be able to hold carol services in their traditional form. However, the J22 benefice churches (Markfield, Thornton, Stanton-under-Bardon, Bagworth and Copt Oak) have had an idea to brighten up our villages and bring a smile to peoples’ faces as they take their daily exercise.
The idea is simple – in the run up to Christmas we would like as many people as possible to decorate a window in their house in the theme of a Christmas Carol. Then as people walk by, they can look out for the decorated windows and guess the carols, maybe singing a few verses to help them on their way.
So start thinking and planning! You could have a theme for your road – for example – The Twelve Days of Christmas – and maybe even vote for your favourite.
However you decide to do it, let’s bring some extra happiness and community spirit to the village this Christmas!
We will be holding an online Carol service and an online Christingle Service – so watch out for details nearer the time!
We would like to thank everybody who took the time to respond to the Thornton Community Survey which was undertaken earlier this year as part of the Thornton Community Development Project either by completing the survey online or by returning the printed edition to the Thornton Village Shop which acted as a local drop off point.
This Survey was developed by the RCC with some input from key organisations and individuals in the community with the aim of providing valuable evidence to help direct future support and development for Thornton and local organisations serving the community.
A copy of the survey results report has already been sent to each of those establishments that feature in the survey results for them to consider the results relevant to their organisation or business and also see the results in the full context of the survey report.
Helen Crouch from the Bagworth, Thornton and Stanton Coronavirus Response team, set up a Facebook fundraiser for her birthday last week, wishing for £200 to be donated to support local people at Christmas.
So far this has exceeded expectations with the sum of £350 already reached, together with advent calendars and other donations.
Monies raised will enable small gifts to be purchased for the children of parents who through no fault of their own have hit hard times because of the pandemic.
If you would like to donate to this very worthy cause please contact Helen Crouch through her Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/BagworthThorntonresponseteam, see her at the weekly Tuesday market at Bagworth, contact her through the Bagworth and Thornton page of https://nextdoor.co.uk or telephone her on 07947 590241.
If you have lost your business or job etc and know this year isn’t going to happen for your children please get in touch with Helen, it’s completely confidential, message or phone her on 07947 590241
At 11.30pm last Friday night (6th Nov) thieves smashed down a metal field gate, a yard gate and barrier, with what must have been a heavy vehicle, to steal a horse trailer from Markfield Lane, Thornton.
Neighbours in Main Street heard the noise and could see activity and lights, so they sent a text message to a person whom they knew to keep horses in the area, but the owner missed the message. The trailer was seen being towed away by a white van. This was a ‘noisy’ crime late at night in an otherwise very quiet village. Reported on Nextdoor by Meg Ashby.
Did you hear or see any unusual activity on Friday? Have you any relevant CCTV footage around that time? If so ring the police on the their non emergency number 101.
IF YOU BELIEVE A CRIME IS IN PROGRESS ALWAYS RING 999.
Over the weekend of the 25th October forced entry to the fire door at the rear of the Reservoir Innwas discovered and reported as a non urgent crime (by internet. A number of discarded empty cans had been left inside the premises. The agent was notified to arrange for the premises to be secured. Two days earlier a small window at the side had been smashed. A number of discarded empty cans had been left inside the premises.
Nearby neighbours on Main Street were alerted by Whatsapp to the crime and shortly afterwards spotted youths going through the pub car park. They notified the police immediately, who sent three cars to the area, but unfortunately they just missed them, presumably making good their escape via the footpath at the rear.
Any unusual activity in the village is worth noting, jot down ‘white van’ numbers, take photographs, check your CCTV, immediately post your suspicions on Nextdoor and the Thornton FB page to warn others to be vigilant.
