September was a busy month in Thornton, with the Beer and Gin festival at the Thornton Club, at the start of the month, a wedding at the church and Community Centre, culminating in the ever popular quiz night and our first ever Scarecrow festival.
At the quiz night £90 was given away in prize money and £250 raised for the benefit of the Community Centre, to improve facilities.
Forty nine scarecrows were displayed throughout the village during the week commencing 16th September. A fantastic response for our first attempt. Well done to Sam Newman for all her hard work in putting it together. Another £447 was raised thanks to sponsors, raffles, tombolas etc.
Three local villagers agreed to act as judges, Muriel Walker, Ingrid Hill and Colin Harris. In the adult category the winner was The Wizard of Oz – 287 Main St. The child category winner was Horrid Henry – 29 Highfields. The group category winner was the Storyteller – Thornton Primary School and the Peoples choice was George’s Thornton Pupeteer – 49 Main St.
It was lovely to see so many friends and families wandering round the village with a smile on their face, and what a superb effort from our entrants – they set the bar high for the next one!! I managed to capture a few of them before the rains came.
