There is a churchyard working party this Saturday, 10th August, from 10 until 12 noon.
It would be great if you could join us, even if its only for a short time.
One of the jobs for this Saturday is to tidy the area around the external heating units. We have weed suppressing black material, gravel boards and gravel.
Other jobs include all the usual things – tidying graves, removing saplings etc.
Please do wear suitable shoes, stout gloves and bring whatever tools you think you would need. And of course a drink.

The theme of this one was to coincide with Thornton Open Gardens in July and added to the fundraising efforts in aid of the maintenance of St Peter’s Church.
This quiz proved to be a ‘bit of a challenge’ with some regular quizzers saying it was harder than my usual cryptic quizzes.
There were just two ‘quizzers’ who got all 50 questions correct .. congratulations to them – neither of them were local, but were visiting from Ilfracombe and Nottingham respectively.

If you are a fundraiser for your local charity I have some similar cryptic quizzes to this one, on various topics and am happy for their use in fundraising in exchange for a small donation of £10 which will be given to the Friends of St Peter’s towards the maintenance of the church and grounds.
Last weekend, 6th and 7th of July, was a busy one in the village with two fund raising events.
Quiz night with cream teas and Prosecco took place on Saturday, raising £480 towards the running costs and upkeep of Thornton Community Centre.
Sunday afternoon saw the return of the biennial Thornton Open Gardens raising funds for the upkeep of St Peter’s Church.
Despite the stormy weather forecast and the couple of heavy showers that materialised, this year’s Thornton Open Gardens proved popular once again.Â
On the afternoon of Sunday 7th July, 302 visitors came to enjoy our 13 contrasting open gardens.
As well as the gardens themselves to admire, there was a variety of refreshments on sale, a plant sale, a quiz and a fun animal hunt. Â
Locals, friends and acquaintances rubbed shoulders with visitors from further afield, many of them regularly seeking out summer open gardens events all over the Midlands.Â
Everyone seemed to enjoy all that Thornton had to offer. The event made an impressive profit of £1697 which is to go towards the maintenance of St Peter’s Church.
Friends of St Peter’s would like to thank all those who opened their gardens, served refreshments, directed the car parking, donated and sold plants and manned the church.Â
Our thanks, too, to The Brickies (Bricklayers Arms), the Shop and Thornton Nurseries for selling programmes. Also, to The Garden Design Company, who generously supported the event, which was organised by Friends of St Peter’s.
England’s largest festival of history and culture!
Heritage Open Days 2024: 6-15 September
Every September thousands of volunteers across England organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture. It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – all of which are FREE to explore.
As part of Heritage Open Days, St Peter’s Church, Thornton, will be open over the weekend of 14th and 15th September for all to visit. It’s your chance to explore this lovely Grade 1, historical church for yourselves, and discover its wealth of history. An Exhibition in the church entitled ‘Historic Thornton’ will provide a fascinating insight into Thornton’s history.
The church will be open between 10 am and 6 pm on Saturday 14th and from 1 pm till 5 pm on Sunday afternoon. Entry is free. Refreshments will be available to purchase.Â

Supporting a small group of adults with learning disabilities with their contract gardening enterprise.
You will be responsible for the following:
Driving a truck and trailer
Supporting a small group of adults with learning disabilities to safely carry out basic garden and maintenance tasks in a variety of gardens within the community.
Safely loading the truck with the machinery and tools required (Lawnmower etc)
Ensuring safety while using all machinery or tools involved.
Ensuring those involved are carrying out tasks to suit abilities.
Being a positive representative for WHM within the community.
Time keeping- to ensure the group sets off on time, carries out work efficiently, breaks are planned, and that the group returns to main site on time.
Completion of relevant risk assessments and ensuring they are kept up to date.
Organising the ‘Helping Hands’ diary with future bookings/ cancelations with help from the CECIC enterprise coordinator.
Organising payments and money handling.
Requirements
Driving license, with approved use of trailer attached to vehicle.
Competent use of gardening machinery and tools- Lawn Mower, Strimmer etc
First Aid Training
Health and Safety Training
Good time keeping, organisation and planning skills.
