St Peter’s Church needs you

Clean up needed at St Peter’s Church, Thornton !

The good news is that there are no longer bees plaguing St Peter’s Church and we are hoping to get the church building back in use asap. There will be a working party to have a big clear up THIS SATURDAY 27th – from 10am – 12 noon. All help very welcome – just turn up! The church has been out of use since May when bees started nesting in the wall, this meant that bees were getting trapped in the building and dying in huge numbers To get the church in a usable state there is lots of cleaning up to do – PLEASE BRING A DUSTPAN AND BRUSH! The plan is to get back into using the church – rather than the Community Centre, which has been our temporary home – by August 4th! If you have any queries please call 230422 or email churchwarden.thornton@gmail.com

Thornton – Art, Sculpture & Photography Exhibition

The first art, sculpture and photography exhibition to be held at Thornton Community Centre was a great success, with 300 people passing through the doors over the two days of the 6th & 7th of July.

The sports hall was devoted to photographic works, whilst the main hall contained artwork and sculptures.

Many of the works of art were sold to the public with 10% commission being given to the centre. The cafe was open on both days and proved very popular, with a steady flow of visitors from all over the county seeking refreshments.

Many thanks to all who supported this event by helping over the weekend, or by visiting to admire the works on display.

Entry cost just a £1 which included a raffle ticket. Four prizes were donated, a beautiful owl carved by chainsaw from a fallen lime tree from Bosworth Hall, by Tony Gardner, an original print by Ingrid Hill, a stunning photograph of an owl by Arthur Beyliss, and a pack of artists brushes by Gadsbys of Leicester.

First prize went to Joan Turville (Desford), Second to Sean Fuller (Thornton), Third prize to Judith Cooke and fourth to Mrs Reader (Thornton).

Over £500 was raised towards the upkeep, and for ongoing improvements at the centre.

Both exhibitors and visitors expressed a desire for this event to be repeated on a regular basis.

More events are in the planning stage – so watch this space ..
