Thanks from St Peter’s Church, Thornton

A huge thank you to everyone who supported our first ever Clear Out Sale at Thornton Community Centre.

After donations were included an amazing sum of £510 was made for the upkeep of Thornton’s beautiful ancient church.

Thank you!

Following on from the success of this venture we are hoping to have more of these events in the future.   Do watch out for details.

All the tables were booked very quickly.  I am sorry to those of you who would have liked one but were unlucky this time.

Thanks again to everyone who supported this event or helped in any way.

Working Party – St Peter’s Church – Saturday 5th March

Now spring is rapidly approaching I think we should start the working parties going again to tidy the churchyards.

The first one will be this coming Saturday from 10 am until 12 noon. If you are able to join us, even if its only for a short while you would be very welcome.

Jobs include collecting  the fallen branches and twigs,  tidying some of the graves in the old church yard, clearing the drains and anything else you think needs doing.

Please bring gloves and whatever tools you think you might need.   A flask of tea or coffee might be nice as we usually stop for a break around 11 am.  I will provide biscuits.

Hope some of you can make it.  If you know anyone else that would like to join us then do bring them along.

Thanks.

Shirley (Churchwarden)

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Thornton Community Centre and the grounds to the rear of the centre have been made available to the residents of Thornton (free of charge) over the 4 day Bank Holiday in June (Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June 2022) to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Does anyone have any ideas on how the village may celebrate this momentous occasion?

Are there any residents willing to organise events at the centre, both inside and out?

Would the school children like to take part in activities at the centre?

Picnics, sporting events, music, craft fair, exhibitions, barbeque … every suggestion considered.

The trustees will give their full support to anyone willing to organise and arrange events at the centre.

There are only a handful of trustees, insufficient, to take on this challenge as well as cope with the day to day running of the hall and grounds.

New trustees are always welcome to come and join us.

The centre belongs to the people of the village – let’s all come together there for one big party.

To contact the trustees with your ideas and/or to volunteer please email thorntonvillage@aol.com

New Changes to the Highway Code

The UK government are making 3 very important changes to the Highway Code, which will affect all road users. These changes will come into effect on 29 January and include:

1) New hierarchy of road users prioritising pedestrians and then cyclists over other road users
2) Priority for cyclists over cars when cars are turning
3) Pedestrians having priority over cars at junctions plus changes to cyclist positioning to ensure better visibility

More information and details of the changes here: Table of changes to The Highway Code (publishing.service.gov.uk)
