Recent Crimes in Thornton

At 11.30pm last Friday night (6th Nov) thieves smashed down a metal field gate, a yard gate and barrier, with what must have been a heavy vehicle, to steal a horse trailer from Markfield Lane, Thornton.

Neighbours in Main Street heard the noise and could see activity and lights, so they sent a text message to a person whom they knew to keep horses in the area, but the owner missed the message. The trailer was seen being towed away by a white van. This was a ‘noisy’ crime late at night in an otherwise very quiet village. Reported on Nextdoor by Meg Ashby.

Did you hear or see any unusual activity on Friday? Have you any relevant CCTV footage around that time? If so ring the police on the their non emergency number 101.

IF YOU BELIEVE A CRIME IS IN PROGRESS ALWAYS RING 999.

Over the weekend of the 25th October forced entry to the fire door at the rear of the Reservoir Inn was discovered and reported as a non urgent crime (by internet. A number of discarded empty cans had been left inside the premises. The agent was notified to arrange for the premises to be secured. Two days earlier a small window at the side had been smashed. A number of discarded empty cans had been left inside the premises.

Nearby neighbours on Main Street were alerted by Whatsapp to the crime and shortly afterwards spotted youths going through the pub car park. They notified the police immediately, who sent three cars to the area, but unfortunately they just missed them, presumably making good their escape via the footpath at the rear.

Any unusual activity in the village is worth noting, jot down ‘white van’ numbers, take photographs, check your CCTV, immediately post your suspicions on Nextdoor and the Thornton FB page to warn others to be vigilant.

This is in response to the lockdown that began on 5 November and because demand for the volunteers’ support is continuing to rise. At the same time, they are encouraging anyone who signed up as an NHS Volunteer Responder in March but had to step down due to other commitments, to re-join the programme and give as much time as they can.

Community centre closure

No sooner was I boasting, just one short week ago, that the community centre was open for business and with some exciting new ventures; in order to comply with the new 4 week lockdown, announced by the government last Saturday, we have had to close down again.

Thereby the trustees decided unanimously to close the hall until the 1st January 2021 .

The exception was to be the  opening of the Main Hall on Saturday 5th December to allow for the Luke Jackson Charity to be  administered, however the trustees of the charity have now decided to defer payments until the new year.

Whilst all other classes have had to cease, as per government guidance, the playschool will remain open.

Ingrid has cancelled her Wednesday afternoon art class until further notice.

Daniel held his Tuesday Zumba Class yesterday and that will be his last one for the foreseeable future.

Matt Elliott Sports is closing down ALL community Sports Activities until next year.

Likewise there will be no karate sessions this year.

For the latest government guidelines and restrictions from Thursday 5th November 2020 follow this link to the relevant government webpages.

FOR AND ON BEHALF OF BAGWORTH AND THORNTON PARISH COUNCIL

Cllr. Russell George, Chair

Thursday, 27 August 2020

Wouldn’t it be fabulous if there was interest in the village to turn the old pub into a community facility and bring it back to its former glory when it was known as the Tipsy Fisherman.

A tea room and delicatessen, with perhaps art work. crafts, books for sale for the villagers and visitors alike to benefit from. A social hub where our more senior citizens could meet during weekdays for a natter over tea and cake, a facility currently lacking in the village. A focal point for visitors at weekends after their stroll around the reservoir. Leicestershire’s many walking clubs and groups would be guaranteed to keep a tea room busy (I know I belong to 3 of them!!).

There may be start up grants available.

£2,250 per calendar month is needed to pay the rent.
